There are many food options in Antwerp but you have to sample Antwerp fries, no Belgian adventure is complete without them! Antwerp takes its fries seriously, twice-cooked for a crispy golden exterior and a fluffy interior. Pair them with a local mayonnaise (there are many delicious varieties!) or other traditional sauces. For an authentic experience, head to Frituur Vleminckx, a local favourite known for its long lines and crispy perfection. Staying on the potato theme, how about mashed potato balls (ballerballen)? Made with mashed potatoes, onions, and sometimes meat, they are deep-fried to crispy perfection. Enjoy them as a snack or a light lunch. Visit Frituur Number One to sample them. The final snack to make our list are Antwerp hands (Antwerpse handjes). These small, flaky puff pastries are shaped like hands and filled with a sweet or savoury mixture. A delightful treat with a long history in the city. Head to De Handjeswinkel, a traditional bakery specialising in them.


Belgian Food


For an evening meal, don't miss the opportunity to savour some Belgian classics like moules frites (mussels and fries), savoury waffles topped with cheese and ham, or comforting stews like waterzooi or carbonade flamande. If you're looking for a cozy pub atmosphere with a great selection of Belgian beers and hearty dishes, then De Drie Rotten (The Three Rotten) is a popular choice.
